Marc Craig, a London-based artist originally from Winchester, UK, is passionate about nature and conservation. In June 2024 he wanted to create a project that would be able to connect people around the globe in what feels to him to be a more polarising environment. From that notion he created this project, "Ark of Extinction," using his artwork to raise awareness and drive action towards saving endangered species. Inspired by the critically endangered Vaquita porpoise in Mexico, Marc has begun to create artworks of endangered species from around the globe, rendered in his signature black and white doodle style. This project highlights the plight of these species and fosters conversations about conservation.
Despite having lived in various locations, Marc feels a particularly strong connection to Cornwall, where his deep family roots lie. Trained in textile design and ceramics at art school, he describes himself as a multi-disciplined artist. His creative passions include photography, painting, and sculpture. Over the past ten years, his focus has primarily shifted to large-scale murals, especially in Leake Street underneath Waterloo Station, where he currently serves as the Artist in Residence.
Deeply committed to mental health well-being, Marc's art reflects this dedication. He is also passionate about creative advocacy, enjoying discussions and collaborations with other creatives. He has a keen interest in understanding and exploring the creative process.
The vaquita (Phocoena sinus), the smallest living cetacean, is critically endangered, with fewer than 10 individuals remaining. Endemic to the northern part of the Gulf of California, their steep decline is primarily due to bycatch in gillnets from illegal totoaba fishing. Conservation efforts are urgent as the population has plummeted from an estimated 567 individuals in 1997 to less than 19 in 2018. Recent conservation measures have had limited success, and the vaquita remains on the brink of extinction, emphasizing the need for sustained and intensified efforts to prevent their total disappearance.
